Why should I be baptized?

We read throughout the Bible that when people make a decision to follow Jesus their first response is baptism. If you are a follower of Jesus, he invites you to be baptized as a first, tangible, public step of following him.

Why is baptism important?

Obedience to Jesus. Baptism is clearly commanded as the first act of obedience when a person comes to believe in Jesus. Jesus himself was baptized and repeatedly calls us to do the same thing when we believe in him. In the Great Commission he commands his disciples to make disciples, to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and to teach them to obey Jesus (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Matthew 28:18-20).

Identification with Jesus. When Jesus was baptized, God spoke from heaven and said, “This is my Son.” In the same way, baptism is a public way to say to God, family, friends, the church and others that you are living a new life for God through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament it was always outdoors, even more public than our current practice (Matthew 3:17; Galatians 3:26-29).

Symbolism of Jesus’ work. The act of baptism symbolizes our identification with the death and resurrection of Jesus. It reminds everyone involved of the great extent to which Jesus went to save us and the way in which he calls us to follow him—to give up our lives to live for him. It also symbolizes the way we have been washed and are now clean and holy because of Jesus’ death (Romans 6:3; Acts 22:16).

Entrance into Jesus’ church. Although we believe salvation comes from Jesus apart from any works on our part (this is in a sense a private matter of the heart), baptism is understood to be our public entrance into the body of Christ, the church (1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:27).

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.

Acts 2:38-39
